Brave little mama bird

About week ago, Lonnie called my attention to a flower pot on the back porch. The plant had died and the pot, with its two desiccated stalks, had been left on the little flower cart by the back door. It had been sitting there a while, alongside my flip-flops, a couple of bug lanterns, etc., and forgotten about.

Well, anyway, he noticed dirt scattered on the floor, got to investigating, and discovered that a bird had pulled out one of the dead stalks and hollowed out a place in the dirt. We watched the progress as two little birds built a snug home.

Notice the way the opening is on the side, rather than on top. It faces in toward the porch, so it is protected from the wind and rain.

A couple of days after they finished the nest, we saw the first egg. Then another one. Then three.

Then four.

Now there are five little speckled eggs in that nest. I don't know how five baby birds are going to fit in there, but I guess they'll have to.

We're still going in and out the back door, but not as much as usual, hoping that the brave little mama won't abandon her nest.
