Is this really necessary?

I recently bought a new curling iron, one of those big ones with the 1-1/2" ceramic barrel. Similar to what Tra uses when he does my hair. All was well until I tried to get into the box. Apparently, the manufacturer was afraid someone would open it up in the store and use it before paying for it.


By the time I finally got the curling iron loose, the box was in shreds. Now was that absolutely necessary?
